Tips on saving water
Written by PGS Admin

An average household in the UK uses about 500,000 litres of water each year. At this rate, water shortage is becoming more common here in the UK and also many parts around the world. Any little improvement in water usage contributes significantly in reducing annual consumption. There are many things that we can do to reduce the amount of water that we use and we are going to take a look at some of them now.

Here are some waysthat you can save water at home:

Check For Leaks- check your plumbingand appliances for leaks. Leaking plumbing and appliances could account for 10% of the water consumption in your home. Turn off all faucets and write down your water meter reading. Wait for a couple of hours and if the reading has changed, it is possible that you have a leak. If you can’t find the leak, you may need to call a dependable plumber.

Use Low-Flow Showerheads- old shower heads are inefficient with an output of 30litres of water per minute. Low-flow shower heads are far more efficient at only 7 litres per minute. By replacing all shower heads, your annual water usage could be reduced by 18,000 litres. Because less water is heated, you also conserve electrical power.

Replace Toilets- old toilets may use more than 11 litres of water with each flush. Choose low-flush toilet that requires only 6 litres of water and it’s a common standard for new toilets. New, efficient toilets will pay for themselves in less than four years with normal usages.

Replace Old Washing Machine- if it’s time to replace your washing machine, then you should choose a model with Watersense and Energy Star rating. Properly certified washing machines are 40% more efficient than regular washers. With a couple of full loads of laundry each week, your annual saving could be around 26,000 litres.

Turn Off Faucets Frequently- if it takes a couple of minutes to brush your teeth and you leave the water running, you may throw away almost 4 litres of water for nothing. Also turn off faucets often when doing the dishes. This simple habit could save more than 56,000 litreseach year.

Go To Car Wash- average car owners are not professional car washers and they may waste more than 18 litres of water per minute. Commercial car washes have strict standards to reduce water consumption. Also, car washes usually recycle their water to reduce costs. By using the service of commercial car wash, you may save around 38,000 litres of water each year.
